Definition
Let be a Lie group with identity . A Zassenhaus neighbourhood of is an open neighbourhood of with the following property. For every discrete subgroup of , the subgroup generated by is nilpotent.
Remarks
Every Lie group has a Zassenhaus neighbourhood, by a theorem of Zassenhaus. One can moreover choose so that lies in a connected nilpotent Lie subgroup of .
Example: in , every open neighbourhood of is a Zassenhaus neighbourhood. Indeed every subgroup of is abelian, hence nilpotent.
Non-example: in . The rotation group of the icosahedron is a finite, hence discrete, subgroup isomorphic to the alternating group . It lies in and is not nilpotent, since is simple and non-abelian.
