Builds on Partial sumConvergent seriesDivergent seriesCauchy criterion for series

Statement

Let (an)n≥1(a_n)_{n \ge 1} be a sequence of positive real numbers such that ∑an\sum a_n diverges. Let sn=a1+⋯+ans_n = a_1 + \cdots + a_n be the partial sums, and let α\alpha be a real number. Then ∑n=1∞an/snα\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} a_n / s_n^{\alpha} converges if α>1\alpha > 1, and diverges if α≤1\alpha \le 1.

Remarks

For α=1\alpha = 1 and m>nm > n, the terms with index from n+1n+1 to mm satisfy ∑k=n+1mak/sk≥(sm−sn)/sm\sum_{k=n+1}^{m} a_k / s_k \ge (s_m - s_n)/s_m. Since sm→∞s_m \to \infty, this tends to 11 as m→∞m \to \infty, so the Cauchy criterion fails. For α<1\alpha < 1, one has sn≥1s_n \ge 1 for large nn, so an/snα≥an/sna_n / s_n^{\alpha} \ge a_n / s_n. For α>1\alpha > 1, one has an/snα≤∫sn−1snt−α dta_n / s_n^{\alpha} \le \int_{s_{n-1}}^{s_n} t^{-\alpha} \, dt for n≥2n \ge 2, and these integrals add up to at most ∫s1∞t−α dt<∞\int_{s_1}^{\infty} t^{-\alpha} \, dt < \infty. Example: with an=1a_n = 1, one has sn=ns_n = n, and the theorem says that ∑1/nα\sum 1/n^{\alpha} converges exactly when α>1\alpha > 1.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem shows that there is no slowest divergent series: from any divergent series of positive terms, ∑an/sn\sum a_n / s_n diverges, and its terms are much smaller than ana_n. It also gives a supply of convergent series near the boundary. So no single comparison series can decide all series of positive terms, which is one reason why there is a whole scale of convergence tests.
