Cauchy sequence

Definition

Let (an)(a_n) be a real sequence. The sequence is a Cauchy sequence if the following holds for each real number ε>0\varepsilon > 0. There is a natural number NN such that ∣am−an∣<ε|a_m - a_n| < \varepsilon for all natural numbers m,n≥Nm, n \ge N.

Remarks

In a metric space (X,d)(X, d), the definition is the same with d(am,an)d(a_m, a_n) in place of ∣am−an∣|a_m - a_n|. The definition does not mention a limit. In R\mathbb{R}, the Cauchy criterion shows that the Cauchy sequences are exactly the convergent sequences. It is not enough that ∣an+1−an∣→0|a_{n+1} - a_n| \to 0. The sequence an=na_n = \sqrt{n} has this property, but it is not Cauchy.

Explanations

L1 human

In a Cauchy sequence, the terms become close to each other, not only to their neighbours. From some index on, any two terms differ by less than the error that you allow.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

41 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
