Absorbing set
Builds on Vector spaceAbsolute value
Definition
Let be or , and let be a vector space over . A subset is absorbing if the following holds. For every there is such that for every with absolute value .
Remarks
An absorbing set contains : for there is with , so for some , and then . If is balanced, then is absorbing if and only if for every there is with . Example: the open unit ball of a normed space is absorbing; for take , and then whenever . Non-example: in , the axis is not absorbing, because for every . In a topological vector space every neighbourhood of is absorbing, since is continuous and tends to .
