Definition
Let be a ring, and let be its additive abelian group. An additive character of is a group homomorphism , that is, a map with The additive character is the trivial additive character.
Remarks
Then and . If is finite, every value is a root of unity, so is a character of the abelian group with values in the unit circle. For topological rings, such as or the -adic numbers, one asks to be continuous with values in the unit circle.
Example: for a prime , the map on is well defined, since changing by a multiple of does not change the value. It is an additive character, because .
Example: for the finite field with , the map , where is the field trace, is a nontrivial additive character, the canonical one. Every additive character of is for exactly one .
Non-example: for an odd prime , the map on is not an additive character. At it gives for , but , and these differ because is not an integer.
