Allen–Cahn equation
Builds on Reaction–diffusion systemLaplacian
Definition
Let be open and let . Let , so that . The Allen–Cahn equation is the reaction–diffusion equation for : where is the Laplacian in .
Remarks
Example: with , the function is a stationary solution. Indeed, with one finds . Non-example: the Cahn–Hilliard equation is of fourth order, so it is not of this form. The equation is the gradient flow of the energy so does not increase along smooth solutions with Neumann boundary conditions. Some authors scale the equation as instead.
