Analytic semigroup
Definition
Let be a complex Banach space and let be a strongly continuous semigroup of bounded operators on . For , let . The semigroup is analytic if for some there is a family of bounded operators on with these properties. It agrees with the semigroup on , and:
- for all ;
- the map is holomorphic on with values in the bounded operators;
- as in , for every .
Remarks
Example: let be a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space and . By the spectral theorem, is defined for , with . It satisfies the three clauses with , so is analytic; the heat semigroup is the case .
Non-example: on , let . For an analytic semigroup, lies in the domain of the generator for every and every . Here this would mean that every shifted function lies in the Sobolev space , which is false, so no extension satisfying the clauses exists.
The semigroup is a bounded analytic semigroup if moreover is bounded on each smaller sector with .
