Arago spot
Builds on Fresnel diffraction
Example
Let a plane wave , with , fall normally on an opaque disk of radius in the plane . Take the field just behind the plane to be outside the disk and on it. Compute the field on the axis at distance with the Fresnel diffraction integral. In polar coordinates in the plane, with . The last integral, taken as an Abel limit (with a factor , ), equals . Since , one gets So the centre of the shadow is exactly as bright as the unobstructed wave. This bright spot in the middle of the shadow is the Arago spot.
Remarks
Geometrical optics predicts complete darkness on the axis behind the disk, so the spot is a pure wave effect. Poisson derived the spot from Fresnel's wave theory as an argument against it, and Arago then observed it, which supported the theory. In practice the spot is seen when the edge of the disk is smooth to within a small fraction of the Fresnel zone widths.
