Fresnel number

Builds on Physical optics

Definition

Consider monochromatic light of wavelength λ\lambda passing through an aperture of characteristic size aa, such as the radius of a circular aperture. The light is observed on a screen at distance LL from the aperture. The Fresnel number is NF=a2Lλ.N_F = \frac{a^2}{L \lambda}.

Remarks

Example: a=1a = 1 mm, λ=500\lambda = 500 nm and L=1L = 1 m give NF=10−6/(5⋅10−7)=2N_F = 10^{-6} / (5 \cdot 10^{-7}) = 2. For a circular aperture of radius aa and a point on the axis, the mm-th Fresnel zone has outer radius about mλL\sqrt{m \lambda L}. So NFN_F is the number of Fresnel zones that fit in the aperture. The regimes are: NF≪1N_F \ll 1 for Fraunhofer diffraction, NF≳1N_F \gtrsim 1 for Fresnel diffraction, and NF≫1N_F \gg 1 for the geometrical shadow. The number depends on the choice of aa (radius or diameter), so only its order of magnitude matters.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
