Talbot effect
Definition
Let a monochromatic plane wave of wavelength fall normally on a grating in the plane . Let the transmission function of the grating be periodic with period . Write . The Talbot length is . Let be the field behind the grating in the Fresnel approximation. The Talbot effect is the identity for every positive integer , where : the grating reappears as an exact image.
Remarks
Check: in the Fresnel approximation the order is multiplied by , so . At the extra phase is for every , which gives the self-image. At it is , so : the image is shifted by half a period. Non-example: in exact wave optics the order propagates with the phase , which is not quadratic in . The self-images are then only approximate. They are good when , which is where the paraxial approximation holds.
