Fraunhofer diffraction
Builds on Fresnel diffractionFresnel numberFourier transform
Definition
Let be the complex amplitude of a monochromatic field in the plane , with wavelength and wavenumber . Assume is supported in the disk . Assume the observation distance satisfies , so that the Fresnel number is much smaller than . Then the factor in the Fresnel diffraction integral is close to , and the field is where is the Fourier transform. Fraunhofer diffraction is the diffraction pattern in this regime; its intensity is .
Remarks
Example: a slit of width , with for (in one transverse variable), gives . So the intensity is proportional to with , and the dark fringes lie at for nonzero integers . Non-example: for cm, nm and m, one has m, so the condition fails and the pattern on the screen is a Fresnel pattern. A converging lens of focal length produces the Fraunhofer pattern in its focal plane, with replaced by .
