Arithmetical hierarchy
Builds on Well-formed formulaNatural numbers
Definition
Work in the first-order language of arithmetic with symbols , , , and , interpreted in the standard model of the natural numbers. A bounded quantifier has the form or , where is a term not containing . The classes of formulas and are defined by induction on .
- is the class of formulas in which every quantifier is bounded.
- A formula is if it has the form with in .
- A formula is if it has the form with in .
A set is if for some formula , and if the same holds with a formula. A set is if it is both and . A set is arithmetical if it is for some .
Remarks
Example: the halting set is , where is Kleene's T predicate. Every primitive recursive relation is , so is defined by a formula, and so is . The set of programs computing total functions is .
Non-example: the set of Gödel numbers of sentences true in is not arithmetical, by Tarski's undefinability theorem.
A set is if and only if its complement is . The inclusions hold, and each is strict. The classes and are the computably enumerable and the computable sets.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
