Definition
Let be a group and let be a ring. Let be the classifying space of and let be the group ring. Write for the K-theory spectrum and for the base point component of the infinite loop space. The inclusion gives a map . Its adjoint is a map of spectra . The assembly map is the composite map of spectra where the second map is the product in K-theory and is the smash product. On homotopy groups it gives homomorphisms .
Remarks
Example: for trivial, and the assembly map is the identity of . Example: for and , the image of the assembly map is generated by the classes of for , and its cokernel is the Whitehead group . Non-example of an isomorphism: for and , the image on is , but also contains the class group of , which has order . Davis and Lück defined assembly maps for every -CW complex , induced by the map . The map above is the case ; the Farrell–Jones conjecture uses built from virtually cyclic subgroups. The same construction works for L-theory of group rings with involution.
