K-theory K1 and Whitehead groups Concept

Whitehead group

Summary

The Whitehead group Wh(G)\mathrm{Wh}(G) of a group GG is a quotient of K1 of the integral group ring ℤ[G]\Z[G]. One divides out the classes of the trivial units ±g\pm g. It is the home of Whitehead torsion, which decides whether a homotopy equivalence of finite CW complexes is a simple homotopy equivalence. Through the s-cobordism theorem, its vanishing for π1\pi_1 is what makes h-cobordisms of high-dimensional manifolds trivial.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
