Whitehead group

Builds on GroupGroup ringK1 of a ring

Definition

Let GG be a group and let ℤ[G]\Z[G] be its integral group ring. Let T⊆K1(ℤ[G])T \subseteq K_1(\Z[G]) be the subgroup of classes of the 1×11 \times 1 matrices (±g)(\pm g) with g∈Gg \in G, inside K1 of a ring. The Whitehead group of GG is Wh(G)=K1(ℤ[G])/T.\mathrm{Wh}(G) = K_1(\Z[G]) / T.

Remarks

Example: for the trivial group, K1(ℤ)={±1}K_1(\Z) = \set{\pm 1} is generated by the class of (−1)(-1), so Wh(1)=0\mathrm{Wh}(1) = 0. Non-example: for G=ℤ/5ℤG = \Z/5\Z, the group Wh(G)\mathrm{Wh}(G) is infinite cyclic, so TT is not all of K1(ℤ[G])K_1(\Z[G]); there are units of ℤ[G]\Z[G] not of the form ±g\pm g. Wh(G)\mathrm{Wh}(G) is a functor of GG, and it is abelian since K1K_1 is. One also writes Wh(G)=K~1(ℤ[G])/{±g}\mathrm{Wh}(G) = \tilde K_1(\Z[G]) / \set{\pm g} in terms of the reduced group K~1(ℤ[G])=K1(ℤ[G])/{±1}\tilde K_1(\Z[G]) = K_1(\Z[G])/\set{\pm 1}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
