Statement

Let h∗h^* be a generalized cohomology theory and let XX be a finite CW complex. Then there is a spectral sequence (Erp,q,dr)r≥2(E_r^{p,q}, d_r)_{r \ge 2} with differentials dr ⁣:Erp,q→Erp+r,q−r+1d_r \colon E_r^{p,q} \to E_r^{p+r, q-r+1} and E2p,q=Hp(X;hq(point)),E_2^{p,q} = H^p(X; h^q(\text{point})), the ordinary cohomology of XX with coefficients in the group hq(point)h^q(\text{point}). It converges to hp+q(X)h^{p+q}(X): for each nn, the group hn(X)h^n(X) has a finite filtration whose successive quotients are the groups E∞p,qE_\infty^{p,q} with p+q=np + q = n.

Remarks

The spectral sequence comes from the filtration of XX by its skeleta X(p)X^{(p)}. The E1E_1 term is hp+q(X(p),X(p−1))h^{p+q}(X^{(p)}, X^{(p-1)}), which is a sum of copies of hq(point)h^q(\text{point}), one for each pp-cell, and d1d_1 is the cellular coboundary.

For complex K-theory, E2p,q=Hp(X;ℤ)E_2^{p,q} = H^p(X; \Z) for qq even and 00 for qq odd. So d2=0d_2 = 0, and the first possible nonzero differential d3 ⁣:Hp(X;ℤ)→Hp+3(X;ℤ)d_3 \colon H^p(X; \Z) \to H^{p+3}(X; \Z) is the integral lift of the Steenrod square Sq3Sq^3. All differentials are torsion-valued, so the spectral sequence collapses after tensoring with ℚ\Q, which recovers the Chern character isomorphism.

Example: for X=SnX = S^n, the E2E_2 page has nonzero columns only at p=0p = 0 and p=np = n, and for KK-theory no differential can be nonzero when nn is even. This gives K~(Sn)≅Hn(Sn;ℤ)=ℤ\tilde{K}(S^n) \cong H^n(S^n; \Z) = \Z for even nn.

For a student

The spectral sequence is the main computational tool for K-theory and cobordism of CW complexes. When the cohomology of XX is free and concentrated in even degrees, all differentials vanish for K-theory. Then K0(X)K^0(X) is free of rank equal to the sum of the Betti numbers; this applies to complex projective spaces and Grassmannians. The same method, applied to a Serre fibration and a generalized cohomology theory, gives a version of the Serre spectral sequence for that theory.
