Statement

Let XX be a finite CW complex. Let ch⁡ ⁣:K0(X)→Heven(X;ℚ)=⨁kH2k(X;ℚ)\operatorname{ch} \colon K^0(X) \to H^{\text{even}}(X; \Q) = \bigoplus_k H^{2k}(X; \Q) be the Chern character. It is the natural ring homomorphism with ch⁡(L)=ec1(L)\operatorname{ch}(L) = e^{c_1(L)} for complex line bundles LL, where c1c_1 is the first Chern class. Then ch⁡⊗ℚ ⁣:K0(X)⊗ℚ→⨁k≥0H2k(X;ℚ)\operatorname{ch} \otimes \Q \colon K^0(X) \otimes \Q \to \bigoplus_{k \ge 0} H^{2k}(X; \Q) is an isomorphism of rings. Applied to the suspension of XX, the Chern character also gives an isomorphism K1(X)⊗ℚ≅⨁k≥0H2k+1(X;ℚ)K^1(X) \otimes \Q \cong \bigoplus_{k \ge 0} H^{2k+1}(X; \Q).

Remarks

The Chern character, extended to all degrees, is a natural transformation of generalized cohomology theories from K∗(−)⊗ℚK^*(-) \otimes \Q to ∏kH∗+2k(−;ℚ)\prod_k H^{*+2k}(-; \Q). Both are cohomology theories on finite CW complexes, because tensoring with ℚ\Q preserves exact sequences. The map is an isomorphism on a point, where both sides are ℚ\Q in even degrees and 00 in odd degrees. Induction on the cells, using the five lemma and the long exact sequences, gives the isomorphism for all finite CW complexes. Equivalently, the Atiyah–Hirzebruch spectral sequence for K-theory collapses rationally.

Example: for X=S2X = S^2, K0(S2)K^0(S^2) is free abelian with basis 11 and [H][H], where HH is the tautological line bundle, and ch⁡(H)=1+c1(H)\operatorname{ch}(H) = 1 + c_1(H), where c1(H)c_1(H) generates H2(S2;ℤ)H^2(S^2; \Z). So ch⁡\operatorname{ch} maps K0(S2)K^0(S^2) isomorphically onto the integral lattice H0(S2;ℤ)⊕H2(S2;ℤ)H^0(S^2; \Z) \oplus H^2(S^2; \Z) in this case.

Tensoring with ℚ\Q is necessary. For the real projective plane, K~(ℝP2)≅ℤ/2\tilde{K}(\R P^2) \cong \Z/2, while H~even(ℝP2;ℚ)=0\tilde{H}^{\text{even}}(\R P^2; \Q) = 0, so torsion in K-theory is lost. Also, the image of ch⁡\operatorname{ch} need not lie in integral cohomology: ch⁡(E)=rank⁡E+c1+12(c12−2c2)+⋯\operatorname{ch}(E) = \operatorname{rank} E + c_1 + \frac{1}{2}(c_1^2 - 2 c_2) + \cdots has denominators.

Going deeper

For a student

The rational isomorphism is used constantly to compute with K-theory: classes in K-theory are tested through their Chern characters. It is the bridge between the K-theoretic form of index theorems and their cohomological form, where the Chern character of the symbol is integrated against the Todd class. Integrality questions, that is, which rational classes are Chern characters of actual bundles, lead to deep constraints such as those used by Adams in the Hopf invariant one problem.
