Axiom of constructibility
Builds on Constructible universeZermelo–Fraenkel set theoryOrdinal number
Definition
Work in ZF, and let be the constructible universe, where runs over the ordinals. The axiom of constructibility is the sentence It is written , where is the class of all sets.
Remarks
The sentence holds inside itself: the construction of is absolute for transitive models of ZF that contain , so the class computed inside is again . This gives the relative consistency of with ZF. For a non-example, take a forcing extension of by a Cohen real ; the real is not in , so fails in . Under there is a well-order of the reals that is in the projective hierarchy. Scott proved that implies that there is no measurable cardinal.
