Constructible universe

Builds on Zermelo–Fraenkel set theoryOrdinal numberClass

Description

For a set XX, let Def⁡(X)\operatorname{Def}(X) be the set of all subsets of XX that are definable in the structure (X,∈)(X, \in). Here a definition is a first-order formula with parameters from XX. Define sets LαL_\alpha by recursion on the ordinals α\alpha: L0=∅,Lα+1=Def⁡(Lα),Lλ=⋃α<λLα for a limit ordinal λ.L_0 = \emptyset, \qquad L_{\alpha + 1} = \operatorname{Def}(L_\alpha), \qquad L_\lambda = \bigcup_{\alpha < \lambda} L_\alpha \text{ for a limit ordinal } \lambda. The constructible universe is the class L=⋃αLαL = \bigcup_{\alpha} L_\alpha, where α\alpha runs over all ordinals. A set is constructible when it lies in LL.

The class LL is an inner model of ZF. Each LαL_\alpha is transitive, so LL is transitive. The ordinal α\alpha lies in Lα+1L_{\alpha + 1}, because it is the set of ordinals of LαL_\alpha, and this set is definable over LαL_\alpha. So LL contains every ordinal. The axioms of ZF hold in LL; the hardest case is the separation schema, which uses a reflection argument.

Remarks

For finite nn one has Ln=VnL_n = V_n, so Lω=VωL_\omega = V_\omega is the set of hereditarily finite sets. At the next level they differ: Lω+1L_{\omega + 1} is countable, because there are only countably many formulas with finitely many parameters from the countable set LωL_\omega, while Vω+1V_{\omega + 1} is uncountable. The class LL satisfies the axiom of constructibility V=LV = L, and it is contained in every inner model of ZF. Gödel's theorem says that the axiom of choice and the generalized continuum hypothesis hold in LL.
