Axiom schema of replacement

Builds on Zermelo–Fraenkel set theorySetFunction

Definition

Work in first-order logic with the relation symbol ∈\in. Let φ(x,y,w1,…,wn)\varphi(x, y, w_1, \dots, w_n) be a formula whose free variables are among x,y,w1,…,wnx, y, w_1, \dots, w_n, and in which AA and BB do not occur. The instance of replacement for φ\varphi is the axiom ∀w1⋯∀wn ∀A (∀x∈A ∃!y φ(x,y,w)→∃B ∀y (y∈B↔∃x∈A φ(x,y,w))).\forall w_1 \cdots \forall w_n\, \forall A\, \Bigl( \forall x \in A\, \exists! y\, \varphi(x, y, w) \to \exists B\, \forall y\, \bigl( y \in B \leftrightarrow \exists x \in A\, \varphi(x, y, w) \bigr) \Bigr). The axiom schema of replacement is the set of these axioms, one for each formula φ\varphi.

In words: if φ\varphi defines a function on the set AA, then the image of AA under this function is a set.

Remarks

Example: let φ(x,y)\varphi(x, y) say "xx is a natural number and yy is the set ω+x\omega + x". For A=ωA = \omega the hypothesis holds, so replacement gives the set {ω+n:n∈ω}\set{\omega + n : n \in \omega}, whose union is the ordinal ω+ω\omega + \omega. Non-example: the set Vω+ωV_{\omega + \omega} of all sets of rank below ω+ω\omega + \omega satisfies all axioms of Zermelo set theory, but not replacement. In it, the instance above fails: each ω+n\omega + n lies in Vω+ωV_{\omega + \omega}, but the set {ω+n:n∈ω}\set{\omega + n : n \in \omega} has rank ω+ω\omega + \omega and does not. Replacement implies the separation scheme, given the other axioms of ZF. It is used to justify definitions by transfinite recursion on the ordinals.
