Balanced set
Builds on Vector spaceAbsolute value
Definition
Let be or , and let be a vector space over . A subset is balanced if for every and every with , where is the absolute value.
Remarks
In short, whenever . Balanced sets are also called circled. A set that is both convex and balanced is called absolutely convex, or a disk. Example: the closed unit ball of a normed space is balanced, since for and . Non-example: in , the interval is not balanced, since but . Over the condition is stronger: the square is balanced in the real vector space , but not in the complex vector space , since while .
