Definition

Let GG be a group and let ℤ[G]\Z[G] be its group ring. For n≥0n \ge 0, let BnB_n be the free left ℤ[G]\Z[G]-module with basis the symbols [g1∣⋯∣gn][g_1 | \cdots | g_n] with g1,…,gn∈Gg_1, \dots, g_n \in G; the basis of B0B_0 is the single symbol [ ][\,]. For n≥1n \ge 1, the ℤ[G]\Z[G]-linear map dn ⁣:Bn→Bn−1d_n \colon B_n \to B_{n-1} is given on the basis by dn[g1∣⋯∣gn]=g1[g2∣⋯∣gn]+∑i=1n−1(−1)i[g1∣⋯∣gigi+1∣⋯∣gn]+(−1)n[g1∣⋯∣gn−1].d_n [g_1 | \cdots | g_n] = g_1 [g_2 | \cdots | g_n] + \sum_{i=1}^{n-1} (-1)^i [g_1 | \cdots | g_i g_{i+1} | \cdots | g_n] + (-1)^n [g_1 | \cdots | g_{n-1}]. The augmentation ε ⁣:B0→ℤ\varepsilon \colon B_0 \to \Z sends [ ][\,] to 11, where every element of GG acts on ℤ\Z as the identity. The bar resolution of GG is the complex ⋯→B2→d2B1→d1B0→εℤ→0\cdots \to B_2 \xrightarrow{d_2} B_1 \xrightarrow{d_1} B_0 \xrightarrow{\varepsilon} \Z \to 0.

Remarks

It is a free resolution of ℤ\Z over ℤ[G]\Z[G]: one checks d∘d=0d \circ d = 0, and a contracting homotopy over ℤ\Z is given by s(g0[g1∣⋯∣gn])=[g0∣g1∣⋯∣gn]s(g_0 [g_1 | \cdots | g_n]) = [g_0 | g_1 | \cdots | g_n]. Check of d∘d=0d \circ d = 0 in low degree: d1[g]=g[ ]−[ ]d_1 [g] = g[\,] - [\,] and d2[g∣h]=g[h]−[gh]+[g]d_2 [g | h] = g[h] - [gh] + [g], so d1d2[g∣h]=(gh−g)[ ]−(gh−1)[ ]+(g−1)[ ]=0d_1 d_2 [g | h] = (gh - g)[\,] - (gh - 1)[\,] + (g - 1)[\,] = 0. Applying Hom⁡ℤ[G](−,M)\Hom_{\Z[G]}(-, M) identifies Hom⁡ℤ[G](Bn,M)\Hom_{\Z[G]}(B_n, M) with the set of functions Gn→MG^n \to M, the inhomogeneous cochains of group cohomology. The normalized bar resolution uses only symbols with all gi≠1g_i \ne 1; it is also a free resolution of ℤ\Z. Non-example: for G=ℤ/2ℤ={1,t}G = \Z/2\Z = \set{1, t}, the periodic complex ⋯→ℤ[G]→1−tℤ[G]→1+tℤ[G]→1−tℤ[G]→ℤ→0\cdots \to \Z[G] \xrightarrow{1 - t} \Z[G] \xrightarrow{1 + t} \Z[G] \xrightarrow{1 - t} \Z[G] \to \Z \to 0 is a free resolution of ℤ\Z, but it is not the bar resolution, whose term BnB_n has rank 2n2^n.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
