Basic open set

Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let . The basic open set (or principal open set) of is the subset of the spectrum of . It is the complement of the closed set of the Zariski topology, hence open.
Remarks
The basic open sets have these properties, for :
- , since a prime ideal contains exactly when it contains or ;
- each open set equals , so the sets form a basis of the topology;
- exactly when is nilpotent, and exactly when is a unit;
- the map induced by is a homeomorphism onto ; see prime ideals of a localization.
Example: in , the set consists of and all with .
Non-example: not every open set is basic. Let be a field and . The set is open, because . If , then and is not a unit, since is neither empty nor everything. Then an irreducible factor of generates a prime ideal that contains , and because is not principal. So but , a contradiction.
