K-theory K1 and Whitehead groups Theorem
Bass–Heller–Swan theorem
Builds on RingK1 of a ringK0 of a ringNK groupsLaurent polynomial ring
Statement
Let be a ring with identity, and let be the Laurent polynomial ring over . Let be K0 of a ring, be K1 of a ring, and be the NK group in degree . Then there is a natural isomorphism Let be a finitely generated projective module, and let . The summand is embedded by sending to the class of the multiplication by on . The two summands come from and from . In particular, if is regular Noetherian, then .
Remarks
The proof studies the projective -modules that become free after inverting , and the localization sequence for . The cokernel of is identified with through the multiplication by .
Example: let be a field. The ring is Euclidean, so its is its group of units, which is . This agrees with , and the factor is generated by the class of .
For a group , applied to the group ring , the theorem gives a decomposition of the Whitehead group of that contains the reduced group as a summand.

For a student
This is the degree one case of the fundamental theorem of algebraic K-theory, which gives the same pattern for in every degree. Bass used the cokernel above to define negative K-groups, so that the pattern continues below degree zero. In topology the formula for the Whitehead group of controls the torsion of h-cobordisms over manifolds with fundamental group .
