Definition

Let N≥2N \ge 2 and J∈ℝJ \in \R. Consider the spin-1/21/2 Heisenberg XXX chain on NN sites with periodic boundary conditions. It is the operator on (ℂ2)⊗N(\C^2)^{\otimes N} given by H=J∑j=1N(𝐒j⋅𝐒j+1−14),𝐒N+1=𝐒1,H = J \sum_{j=1}^{N} \left( \mathbf{S}_j \cdot \mathbf{S}_{j+1} - \tfrac{1}{4} \right), \qquad \mathbf{S}_{N+1} = \mathbf{S}_1, where 𝐒j\mathbf{S}_j is one half of the vector of Pauli matrices acting on site jj. For 0≤M≤N/20 \le M \le N/2, let ∣x1,…,xM⟩| x_1, \dots, x_M \rangle with 1≤x1<⋯<xM≤N1 \le x_1 < \dots < x_M \le N be the basis vector with spins down at the sites xix_i and up elsewhere. Let SMS_M be the symmetric group, let k1,…,kMk_1, \dots, k_M be complex numbers and let APA_P, for P∈SMP \in S_M, be complex amplitudes. The coordinate Bethe ansatz is the trial vector ∑ψ(x1,…,xM)∣x1,…,xM⟩\sum \psi(x_1, \dots, x_M) | x_1, \dots, x_M \rangle with ψ(x1,…,xM)=∑P∈SMAPexp⁡(i∑j=1MkP(j)xj).\psi(x_1, \dots, x_M) = \sum_{P \in S_M} A_P \exp\left( i \sum_{j=1}^{M} k_{P(j)} x_j \right). The ratios of the amplitudes are fixed by the two-body scattering of the momenta. Write eikj=(λj+i/2)/(λj−i/2)e^{i k_j} = (\lambda_j + i/2)/(\lambda_j - i/2). Suppose that the λj\lambda_j are distinct and satisfy the Bethe equations (λj+i/2λj−i/2)N=∏l≠jλj−λl+iλj−λl−i,j=1,…,M.\left( \frac{\lambda_j + i/2}{\lambda_j - i/2} \right)^{N} = \prod_{l \ne j} \frac{\lambda_j - \lambda_l + i}{\lambda_j - \lambda_l - i}, \qquad j = 1, \dots, M. Then the vector, when it is nonzero, is an eigenvector of HH. Its eigenvalue is then E=−J2∑j=1M1λj2+1/4E = -\frac{J}{2} \sum_{j=1}^{M} \frac{1}{\lambda_j^2 + 1/4}.

Remarks

More generally, a Bethe ansatz for a one-dimensional model is a trial eigenfunction of this form. It is a sum over permutations of products of plane waves, with amplitudes that factor into two-body scattering terms. Example: for M=1M = 1 the ansatz is the plane wave ψ(x)=eikx\psi(x) = e^{i k x}. Here HH equals J2∑j(Pj,j+1−1)\frac{J}{2} \sum_j (P_{j, j+1} - 1), where Pj,j+1P_{j, j+1} swaps sites jj and j+1j+1, so HψH \psi has coefficients J2(ψ(x−1)+ψ(x+1)−2ψ(x))\frac{J}{2}(\psi(x-1) + \psi(x+1) - 2\psi(x)) and the eigenvalue is J(cos⁡k−1)J(\cos k - 1). Periodicity gives eikN=1e^{i k N} = 1, which is the Bethe equation for M=1M = 1, and J(cos⁡k−1)=−J21λ2+1/4J(\cos k - 1) = -\frac{J}{2} \frac{1}{\lambda^2 + 1/4}. Non-example: adding a next-nearest-neighbour coupling ∑j𝐒j⋅𝐒j+2\sum_j \mathbf{S}_j \cdot \mathbf{S}_{j+2} to HH spoils the factorization of many-body scattering into two-body terms, and the ansatz no longer gives eigenvectors. The algebraic form of the method is the quantum inverse scattering method.
