Quantum Heisenberg model
Builds on Lattice modelTensor product of Hilbert spacesSelf-adjoint operatorBethe ansatz
Example
Let be a finite graph with edge set , and give each vertex a spin . Its spin operators act on the factor of the tensor product . The quantum Heisenberg model is the lattice model with the self-adjoint Hamiltonian with . For it is antiferromagnetic and for ferromagnetic. Check on two spins : with , one has . The singlet () has energy and the three triplet states () have energy .
Remarks
The Hamiltonian commutes with the total spin , so the model has full symmetry. More general versions use different couplings in the three directions and add a magnetic field term . For the spin- chain, Bethe (1931) found the eigenstates by the Bethe ansatz, and Hulthén (1938) computed the antiferromagnetic ground-state energy per site in the infinite chain, . The ferromagnetic ground states are easy: the fully aligned states, with energy for spin and , together with their rotations. The model describes magnetic insulators in which electrons are localized and interact through exchange.
