XXZ model
Builds on Quantum Heisenberg modelLattice modelBethe ansatzSix-vertex model
Example
Let and let , with spin operators for and periodic boundary conditions . For and an anisotropy parameter , the XXZ chain has Hamiltonian It is the anisotropic quantum Heisenberg model with couplings and , and gives the isotropic antiferromagnet. Check: commutes with the total magnetization . Indeed each term moves one unit of between neighbours. For instance the fully polarized state is an eigenstate with energy .
Remarks
The chain is exactly solvable by the Bethe ansatz, and its transfer-matrix description is the six-vertex model. Its zero-temperature phases are: for , a gapped antiferromagnet with Néel order; for , a gapless critical phase described by a Luttinger liquid; for , a ferromagnet. The case is the XX chain, which the Jordan–Wigner transformation maps to free fermions. The parametrization in the critical phase and in the gapped phase is standard in the Bethe ansatz literature.
