Definition
Let be smooth, and consider the family of planar systems with a parameter . Let be an equilibrium point of the system with , and let be the Jacobian matrix of at . The family has a Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation at if:
- is an eigenvalue of of algebraic multiplicity , that is, and ;
- , so that is similar to ;
- two nondegeneracy conditions on the quadratic terms of at hold;
- the map from to the unfolding parameters of the normal form is a local diffeomorphism at .
Remarks
Under these conditions, the family is locally topologically equivalent, near , to the normal form with parameters near . In the -plane, a saddle-node curve, a Hopf curve and a homoclinic bifurcation curve start at the origin.
Example: the normal form itself at has the equilibrium with Jacobian , so clauses 1 and 2 hold.
Non-example: if , then is a double eigenvalue but clause 2 fails; this degenerate case needs more parameters to unfold. In higher dimensions, the same definition applies to the system reduced to a two-dimensional centre manifold.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
