Definition

Let KK be a field. A central simple algebra over KK is a finite-dimensional associative KK-algebra A≠0A \ne 0 whose center is KK and whose only two-sided ideals are 00 and AA. For a KK-algebra AA, let Mm(A)M_m(A) be the matrix ring of m×mm \times m matrices over AA. Two central simple algebras AA and BB over KK are Brauer equivalent if Mm(A)≅Mn(B)M_m(A) \cong M_n(B) as KK-algebras for some integers m,n≥1m, n \ge 1. The Brauer group Br(K)\mathrm{Br}(K) is the set of Brauer equivalence classes [A][A], with the operation [A]⋅[B]=[A⊗KB],[A] \cdot [B] = [A \otimes_K B], the tensor product over KK.

Remarks

The operation is well defined, and Br(K)\mathrm{Br}(K) is an abelian group with identity [K][K] and inverse [A]−1=[Aop][A]^{-1} = [A^{\mathrm{op}}], the opposite algebra; this rests on A⊗KAop≅Md(K)A \otimes_K A^{\mathrm{op}} \cong M_d(K) with d=dim⁡KAd = \dim_K A. By Wedderburn's theorem each central simple algebra is Mn(D)M_n(D) for a central division algebra DD unique up to isomorphism, so each class contains exactly one such DD. Example: Br(ℝ)\mathrm{Br}(\R) has two elements, [ℝ][\R] and [ℍ][\mathbb{H}], by the Frobenius theorem. Example: Br(K)=0\mathrm{Br}(K) = 0 for KK algebraically closed and for KK finite. Non-example: the KK-algebra K×KK \times K has no class in Br(K)\mathrm{Br}(K), since its center is K×KK \times K, not KK, and K×{0}K \times \set{0} is a two-sided ideal. There is an isomorphism Br(K)≅H2(K,(Ks)×)\mathrm{Br}(K) \cong H^2(K, (K^s)^\times) with Galois cohomology, where KsK^s is a separable closure of KK.
