Statement

Let DD be a finite-dimensional associative algebra over the field ℝ\R of real numbers. Suppose DD is a division ring: it has a unit 1≠01 \ne 0 and every nonzero element has a two-sided inverse. Then DD is isomorphic, as an ℝ\R-algebra, to exactly one of ℝ\R, the complex numbers ℂ\C, and the quaternions ℍ\mathbb{H}.

Remarks

Proof idea: each a∈Da \in D lies in the commutative subalgebra ℝ[a]\R[a], which is a finite field extension of ℝ\R, hence ℝ\R or ℂ\C. Using this, one shows that the set VV of elements uu with u2∈ℝu^2 \in \R and u2≤0u^2 \le 0 is a real subspace with D=ℝ⊕VD = \R \oplus V. The rule ⟨u,w⟩=−(uw+wu)/2\ip{u}{w} = -(uw + wu)/2 is a positive definite inner product on VV. An orthonormal basis of VV satisfies the multiplication rules of ℂ\C or ℍ\mathbb{H}, and a fourth basis vector would lead to a contradiction. The dimensions are 11, 22 and 44. Associativity is needed: the octonions form an 88-dimensional real algebra, not associative, in which every nonzero element has an inverse. Finite dimension is needed: the field ℝ(t)\R(t) of rational functions is a commutative division algebra over ℝ\R of infinite dimension.

Going deeper

For a student

In the language of the Brauer group, the only central division algebras over ℝ\R are ℝ\R and ℍ\mathbb{H}. So the Brauer group of ℝ\R has order 22. This agrees with Galois cohomology: ℂ\C is the algebraic closure of ℝ\R, and H2(Gal⁡(ℂ/ℝ),ℂ×)≅ℤ/2ℤH^2(\Gal(\C/\R), \C^\times) \cong \Z/2\Z. Without associativity, a finite-dimensional real division algebra has dimension 11, 22, 44 or 88, by work of Kervaire and of Bott and Milnor. Hurwitz's theorem shows that the normed ones are ℝ\R, ℂ\C, ℍ\mathbb{H} and the octonions.
