Cahn–Hilliard equation
Builds on Parabolic partial differential equationLaplacianAllen–Cahn equation
Definition
Let be open and let . The Cahn–Hilliard equation is the parabolic equation of fourth order for : where is the Laplacian in . The function is the chemical potential. On a bounded one usually imposes on , where is the outer normal.
Remarks
Example: every constant is a solution, since then is constant and . Non-example: the Allen–Cahn equation is of second order and does not conserve mass, so it is not of this form. With the boundary conditions above, , so the mass is conserved. The energy does not increase along smooth solutions.
