statement theorem

Cayley's formula

Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2 be an integer. Then the number of trees with vertex set {1,2,…,n}\{1, 2, \dots, n\} is nn−2n^{n-2}.

Remarks

The trees are labelled: two trees are the same only if they have the same edge set. Thus the formula counts the spanning trees of KnK_n. For n=3n = 3 there are 33 trees, and for n=4n = 4 there are 1616. A proof uses the Prüfer sequence, a bijection between these trees and the sequences of length n−2n - 2 over {1,…,n}\{1, \dots, n\}.

History

Carl Wilhelm Borchardt found the formula in 1860. Arthur Cayley extended it in 1889, and the formula has his name.

Explanations

L1 human

Label nn points with the numbers 11 to nn and count the ways to connect them by a tree. For 44 points there are 42=164^2 = 16 ways: 1212 paths and 44 stars.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
