Characteristic subgroup

Definition

Let GG be a group and let HH be a subgroup of GG. The subgroup HH is characteristic in GG when α(H)=H\alpha(H) = H for each automorphism α\alpha of GG.

Remarks

It is equivalent to ask α(H)⊆H\alpha(H) \subseteq H for each automorphism α\alpha, because then also α−1(H)⊆H\alpha^{-1}(H) \subseteq H. The centre and the commutator subgroup of a group are characteristic. A characteristic subgroup of a normal subgroup of GG is normal in GG.

Explanations

L1 human

A characteristic subgroup is a subgroup that no symmetry of the group can move. Usually such a subgroup has a description that uses only the group operation, like "the elements that commute with everything". Any renaming of the elements that keeps the products correct must keep such a subgroup in place.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
