Definition

Let KK be an algebraic number field with ring of integers π’ͺK\mathcal{O}_K. A modulus of KK is a formal product π”ͺ=π”ͺ0π”ͺ∞\mathfrak{m} = \mathfrak{m}_0 \mathfrak{m}_\infty of a nonzero ideal π”ͺ0\mathfrak{m}_0 of π’ͺK\mathcal{O}_K and a set π”ͺ∞\mathfrak{m}_\infty of real embeddings of KK. Let IKπ”ͺI_K^{\mathfrak{m}} be the group of fractional ideals of KK coprime to π”ͺ0\mathfrak{m}_0. Let PKπ”ͺP_K^{\mathfrak{m}} be its subgroup of principal ideals (Ξ±)(\alpha) with α∈KΓ—\alpha \in K^\times such that v𝔭(Ξ±βˆ’1)β‰₯v𝔭(π”ͺ0)v_{\mathfrak{p}}(\alpha - 1) \ge v_{\mathfrak{p}}(\mathfrak{m}_0) for every prime π”βˆ£π”ͺ0\mathfrak{p} \mid \mathfrak{m}_0 and Οƒ(Ξ±)>0\sigma(\alpha) > 0 for every Οƒβˆˆπ”ͺ∞\sigma \in \mathfrak{m}_\infty. A congruence subgroup modulo π”ͺ\mathfrak{m} is a subgroup HH with PKπ”ͺβŠ†HβŠ†IKπ”ͺP_K^{\mathfrak{m}} \subseteq H \subseteq I_K^{\mathfrak{m}}; the quotient IKπ”ͺ/PKπ”ͺI_K^{\mathfrak{m}}/P_K^{\mathfrak{m}} is the ray class group modulo π”ͺ\mathfrak{m}. Let L/KL/K be a finite Galois extension. It is the class field of HH if the following holds for every nonzero prime ideal 𝔭\mathfrak{p} of π’ͺK\mathcal{O}_K coprime to π”ͺ0\mathfrak{m}_0. The prime 𝔭\mathfrak{p} splits completely in LL if and only if π”βˆˆH\mathfrak{p} \in H. Class field theory is the theory of class fields of congruence subgroups.

Remarks

The main theorems are as follows. Each congruence subgroup HH has a class field LL, unique inside a fixed algebraic closure. This L/KL/K is abelian and unramified at the places not dividing π”ͺ\mathfrak{m}. The Artin map gives Gal⁑(L/K)β‰…IKπ”ͺ/H\Gal(L/K) \cong I_K^{\mathfrak{m}}/H. Every finite abelian extension of KK is the class field of some congruence subgroup. The ray class group is finite, and its order is a multiple of the class number.

Example: K=β„šK = \Q, π”ͺ=n∞\mathfrak{m} = n\infty with nβ‰₯3n \ge 3, and H=Pβ„šπ”ͺH = P_{\Q}^{\mathfrak{m}}. For a prime p∀np \nmid n, the ideal (p)(p) has the unique positive generator pp, so (p)∈H(p) \in H if and only if p≑1(modn)p \equiv 1 \pmod n. This is exactly the condition for pp to split completely in the cyclotomic field β„š(ΞΆn)\Q(\zeta_n), so β„š(ΞΆn)\Q(\zeta_n) is the class field of HH.

Non-example: for π”ͺ=5\mathfrak{m} = 5 without the infinite place, (p)=(βˆ’p)(p) = (-p) lies in Pβ„šπ”ͺP_{\Q}^{\mathfrak{m}} when p≑±1(mod5)p \equiv \pm 1 \pmod 5. So β„š(ΞΆ5)\Q(\zeta_5) is not the class field of Pβ„šπ”ͺP_{\Q}^{\mathfrak{m}}: the prime 19β‰‘βˆ’1(mod5)19 \equiv -1 \pmod 5 gives (19)∈Pβ„šπ”ͺ(19) \in P_{\Q}^{\mathfrak{m}}, but 1919 does not split completely in β„š(ΞΆ5)\Q(\zeta_5). The class field of this group is the real subfield β„š(ΞΆ5+ΞΆ5βˆ’1)=β„š(5)\Q(\zeta_5 + \zeta_5^{-1}) = \Q(\sqrt{5}).
