Statement
Let be a finite Galois extension of algebraic number fields with abelian Galois group . Let be a modulus of , as in class field theory. Assume that is divisible by every finite prime and every real place of that ramifies in . Let be the group of fractional ideals of coprime to , and let be its subgroup of principal ideals with . The Artin map is the homomorphism that sends each prime ideal coprime to to its Frobenius element . Then:
- is surjective.
- Assume that the finite part of is divisible by high enough powers of the ramified primes. Then the kernel of is , where is the ideal norm. Hence
Remarks
The smallest modulus for which part 2 holds is the conductor of . In the language of ideles, there is a surjective homomorphism from the idele class group of onto . Its kernel is the image of the norm from the idele class group of . Artin proved the law using Chebotarev's density theorem and a reduction to cyclotomic extensions.
Example: , a cyclotomic field, . For a prime , is the automorphism . So sends the ideal generated by a positive integer coprime to to . Its kernel is the set of ideals with coprime to and , which is . The theorem becomes .

For a student
The law contains quadratic reciprocity as a special case. Let be an odd prime, and . The Frobenius of an odd prime in is given by the Legendre symbol . Since , it also depends only on modulo . It also contains the higher power reciprocity laws. For and the Hilbert class field it gives an isomorphism between the class group of and the Galois group.
