Definition

Let KK be an algebraic number field and fix an algebraic closure Kβ€Ύ\overline{K} of KK. A finite extension L/KL/K is unramified at every place if two conditions hold. Every nonzero prime ideal of π’ͺK\mathcal{O}_K is unramified in LL. Every real embedding of KK extends only to real embeddings of LL. Consider the finite Galois extensions L/KL/K in Kβ€Ύ\overline{K} with abelian Galois group that are unramified at every place. The Hilbert class field of KK is the compositum HβŠ†Kβ€ΎH \subseteq \overline{K} of all these fields LL.

Remarks

By class field theory, H/KH/K is a finite abelian extension, unramified at every place, and the Artin map gives an isomorphism from the ideal class group Cl(K)\mathrm{Cl}(K) onto Gal⁑(H/K)\Gal(H/K). So [H:K]=hK[H : K] = h_K, and a prime ideal of π’ͺK\mathcal{O}_K splits completely in HH if and only if it is principal. Every ideal of π’ͺK\mathcal{O}_K becomes principal in π’ͺH\mathcal{O}_H (the principal ideal theorem).

Example: K=β„š(βˆ’5)K = \Q(\sqrt{-5}) and L=K(i)=β„š(βˆ’5,i)L = K(i) = \Q(\sqrt{-5}, i). The three quadratic subfields of LL are β„š(i)\Q(i), β„š(5)\Q(\sqrt{5}) and β„š(βˆ’5)\Q(\sqrt{-5}), with discriminants βˆ’4-4, 55 and βˆ’20-20, so dL=(βˆ’4)β‹…5β‹…(βˆ’20)=400=dK2d_L = (-4) \cdot 5 \cdot (-20) = 400 = d_K^2. Hence the relative discriminant of L/KL/K has norm 11 and no finite prime ramifies; KK has no real embedding, so L/KL/K is unramified at every place. Since hK=2=[L:K]h_K = 2 = [L : K], the field LL is the Hilbert class field of KK.

Non-example: Lβ€²=β„š(βˆ’5,2)L' = \Q(\sqrt{-5}, \sqrt{2}) is abelian of degree 22 over KK but not unramified. Its quadratic subfields have discriminants 88, βˆ’20-20 and βˆ’40-40, so dLβ€²=6400=16 dK2d_{L'} = 6400 = 16 \, d_K^2, and some prime of KK above 22 ramifies in Lβ€²L'.
