Definition
Let be a time-oriented Lorentzian manifold, with future-directed timelike curves as in the causal structure. A closed timelike curve is a future-directed timelike curve , with , such that .
Remarks
So a closed timelike curve is a closed curve that is timelike and future-directed at every point. If lies on a closed timelike curve, then , and conversely gives a closed timelike curve through . A spacetime with no closed timelike curve is called chronological.
Example: let where , with the flat metric of Minkowski space, time-oriented by . The curve , , has tangent with , and , so it is a closed timelike curve.
Non-example: in Minkowski space the circle , , is closed, but its tangent has , so it is spacelike, not timelike. In fact Minkowski space has no closed timelike curve, since strictly increases along every future-directed timelike curve.
