Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Proposition

Columns of a matrix transformation are the images of the standard basis vectors

Builds on Multiplication by a matrix as a linear mapMatrix–vector product

Statement

Let AA be an m×nm \times n real matrix. Let T ⁣:ℝn→ℝmT \colon \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^m be the map given by multiplication by a matrix, so that T(x)=AxT(x) = Ax for every xx in ℝn\mathbb{R}^n.

For j=1,…,nj = 1, \dots, n, let eje_j be the vector of ℝn\mathbb{R}^n with entry 11 in place jj and entry 00 elsewhere.

Then column jj of AA is the vector T(ej)T(e_j) for each jj. In other words, AA is the matrix whose columns are T(e1),T(e2),…,T(en)T(e_1), T(e_2), \dots, T(e_n), in this order.

Remarks

The reason is that the matrix-vector product AejAe_j picks out the jj-th column of AA.

The statement shows that a matrix transformation determines its matrix.
