Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let . Two matrices and over commute if where the products are matrix products. A family of matrices is commuting if each two of its members commute.
Remarks
Example: and over commute, since . Non-example: and do not commute, since but . The condition is often written , where is the commutator of and . The matrices that commute with a fixed matrix form the centraliser of in the matrix ring; it contains every polynomial in . Over an algebraically closed field, a commuting family of matrices has a common eigenvector.
