Definition
Let be a Noetherian local ring. The ring is complete if the natural map to its -adic completion is an isomorphism.
Remarks
Equivalently, is Hausdorff for the -adic topology and every Cauchy sequence for this topology converges; for Noetherian local rings the Hausdorff condition always holds by the Krull intersection theorem. Example: the ring of formal power series over a field is complete: a compatible sequence of truncations modulo defines a unique series. Non-example: is a Noetherian local ring that is not complete; its completion is uncountable while is countable, so is not surjective. The completion of any Noetherian local ring is a complete Noetherian local ring with maximal ideal .
