Commutative algebra Definition
Completion of a ring
Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be an ideal of . For let be the natural map of quotient rings. The -adic completion of is the inverse limit with componentwise addition and multiplication.
Remarks
The map , , is a ring homomorphism with kernel . Equivalently, is the ring of Cauchy sequences for the -adic topology modulo the sequences that tend to . For an -module one defines in the same way. Example: for , with a field, and , a compatible sequence is the list of truncations of a formal power series, and . Non-example: for and , the sequence starting with and does not give an element of , since .
