definition

Completely multiplicative function

Definition

An arithmetic function ff is completely multiplicative if f(1)=1f(1) = 1 and f(mn)=f(m)f(n)f(mn) = f(m) f(n) for all positive integers mm and nn.

Remarks

Each completely multiplicative function is multiplicative. The converse fails: Euler's totient function has φ(4)=2\varphi(4) = 2 but φ(2)2=1\varphi(2)^2 = 1. A completely multiplicative function is determined by its values at the primes. Examples are n↦nkn \mapsto n^k, the Liouville function and, for a fixed odd prime pp, the Legendre symbol n↦(np)n \mapsto \left(\frac{n}{p}\right).

Explanations

L1 human

A completely multiplicative function respects every product, not only products of coprime numbers. So it is enough to know its values at the primes, as for the function n↦n2n \mapsto n^2.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
