Description
The Conway groups , and are three sporadic groups, found by John Conway from the symmetries of the Leech lattice. Let be the automorphism group of the Leech lattice, that is, the group of linear isometries of that map the lattice onto itself. Its centre is , and its order is .
- , of order .
- is the stabiliser in of a lattice vector of norm , of order .
- is the stabiliser in of a lattice vector of norm , of order .
All three are simple groups. Here the lattice is scaled so that its shortest nonzero vectors have norm .
Remarks
The group itself is not simple, because of its centre . Several other sporadic groups are subgroups of , among them the Mathieu group , the Higman–Sims group and the McLaughlin group. All three Conway groups are subquotients of the Monster group.
