Debye length
Builds on Poisson's equation in electrostaticsBoltzmann distribution
Definition
Consider a medium of permittivity at absolute temperature that contains mobile charge carriers of species . Species has charge and mean number density , not all zero, and the medium is neutral: . Let be Boltzmann's constant. The Debye length is
Remarks
It is the length for which the linearized equation holds, obtained from Poisson's equation when the carriers follow the Boltzmann distribution and the potential is weak. Example: a salt such as NaCl at concentration has two species with and , where is Avogadro's number, so . In water at degrees Celsius this is about nanometres with in mol per litre, so about nm at . Non-example: a gas of neutral molecules has no free charges, so the sum in the denominator is and there is no screening length. For an electron plasma with immobile ions, the usual form is , where and are the electron temperature and density.
