Decision tree model
Builds on Rooted treeBoolean function
Definition
Let and let be a Boolean function. A decision tree on variables is a finite rooted tree with the following labels.
- Each inner vertex is labelled by an index and has exactly two children, reached by edges labelled and .
- Each leaf is labelled by or .
On an input the tree is evaluated by starting at the root. At an inner vertex with label one moves along the edge labelled , and the output is the label of the leaf reached. The tree computes if its output is for every . The cost of the tree is its depth, the largest number of edges from the root to a leaf. The deterministic decision tree complexity is the least depth of a decision tree that computes .
Remarks
Example: for , let the root query . Its -child is a leaf labelled , and its -child queries and has leaves labelled and . Both clauses hold, the output is correct on all four inputs, and the depth is , so . Non-example: a tree whose root asks whether is not a decision tree in this model, because clause 1 allows only queries of one variable. For every , , since querying all variables suffices. The comparison model is a variant for sorting: inner vertices ask whether for input numbers . A comparison tree that sorts must have at least leaves, so its depth is at least , which is of order .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
