Statement

Let ๐’ž\mathcal{C} be a small category, let ๐’ž^=[๐’žop,๐’๐ž๐ญ]\widehat{\mathcal{C}} = [\mathcal{C}^{\mathrm{op}}, \mathbf{Set}] be the functor category of presheaves on ๐’ž\mathcal{C}, and let yโ€‰โฃ:๐’žโ†’๐’ž^y \colon \mathcal{C} \to \widehat{\mathcal{C}} be the Yoneda embedding. Let PP be a presheaf on ๐’ž\mathcal{C}, and let โˆซP\int P be its category of elements, with objects the pairs (c,x)(c, x) such that xโˆˆP(c)x \in P(c). Let ฯ€โ€‰โฃ:โˆซPโ†’๐’ž\pi \colon \int P \to \mathcal{C} be the projection (c,x)โ†ฆc(c, x) \mapsto c. Then PP is the colimit of the diagram yโˆ˜ฯ€โ€‰โฃ:โˆซPโ†’๐’ž^y \circ \pi \colon \int P \to \widehat{\mathcal{C}}. The colimit cocone has components y(c)โ†’Py(c) \to P given by the natural transformations that correspond to xโˆˆP(c)x \in P(c) under the Yoneda lemma.

Remarks

Proof idea: colimits in ๐’ž^\widehat{\mathcal{C}} are computed objectwise in ๐’๐ž๐ญ\mathbf{Set}. At an object dd, the colimit of the sets Homโก(d,c)\Hom(d, c) over (c,x)โˆˆโˆซP(c, x) \in \int P is a quotient of the set of pairs (gโ€‰โฃ:dโ†’c,xโˆˆP(c))(g \colon d \to c, x \in P(c)), and each pair is identified with (idโกd,P(g)(x))(\id_d, P(g)(x)). So the colimit at dd is P(d)P(d), and the identifications are compatible with the maps of PP.

Example: if P=y(a)P = y(a) is itself representable, then โˆซP\int P is the slice category over aa, which has the terminal object (a,idโกa)(a, \id_a), and the colimit is just y(a)y(a).

In short: every presheaf is a colimit of representable presheaves. Smallness of ๐’ž\mathcal{C} makes โˆซP\int P small, so the colimit is a small colimit.

For a student

The theorem is used to extend a functor Fโ€‰โฃ:๐’žโ†’โ„ฐF \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{E} to all presheaves when โ„ฐ\mathcal{E} has colimits: send PP to the colimit of Fโˆ˜ฯ€F \circ \pi. This extension is the left Kan extension of FF along yy, and it is left adjoint to the functor Eโ†ฆHomโกโ„ฐ(F(โˆ’),E)E \mapsto \Hom_{\mathcal{E}}(F(-), E). Geometric realisation of simplicial sets is built this way, from the standard simplices. The theorem also shows that ๐’ž^\widehat{\mathcal{C}} is the free cocompletion of ๐’ž\mathcal{C}.
