Diagonalisable matrix

Definition

Let FF be a field and let AA be an n×nn \times n matrix over FF. The matrix AA is diagonalisable over FF when there is an invertible n×nn \times n matrix PP over FF such that P−1APP^{-1} A P is a diagonal matrix. An endomorphism of a finite-dimensional space is diagonalisable when its matrix in some basis is diagonal.

Remarks

So AA is diagonalisable if and only if it is similar to a diagonal matrix. The diagonal entries of P−1APP^{-1} A P are the eigenvalues of AA, and the columns of PP are eigenvectors. The matrix (1101)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} is not diagonalisable over any field. Over R\R, the rotation matrix (0−110)\begin{pmatrix} 0 & -1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} is not diagonalisable; over C\C, it is.

Explanations

L1 human

A diagonalisable matrix becomes a diagonal matrix in a suitable basis. In that basis, the map just stretches each coordinate axis by a factor. This makes powers, exponentials and other functions of the matrix easy to compute.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
