Definition

Let FF be a field and let AA and BB be n×nn \times n matrices over FF. The matrix BB is similar to AA when there is an invertible n×nn \times n matrix PP over FF with B=P−1AP.B = P^{-1} A P.

Remarks

Similarity is an equivalence relation on Mn(F)M_n(F). By the change of basis formula, two matrices are similar if and only if they represent the same endomorphism of FnF^n in two bases. Similar matrices have the same trace, determinant, characteristic polynomial, rank and eigenvalues. The matrices I2I_2 and (1101)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} have the same characteristic polynomial but are not similar.

Explanations

L1 human

Similar matrices describe the same linear map, seen from two different bases. Properties of the map itself, like trace and determinant, are the same for both matrices. A main goal of linear algebra is to find a simple matrix in each similarity class.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
