Definition
Let be an open interval, let , and let . The four Dini derivatives of at are the following elements of the extended real line.
- The upper right Dini derivative .
- The lower right Dini derivative .
- The upper left Dini derivative .
- The lower left Dini derivative .
Here the upper and lower limits are the limit superior and limit inferior of the quotient. They are taken over in the given one-sided range with .
Remarks
Always and . The right derivative of at exists and is finite exactly when is finite, and similarly on the left. So is differentiable at exactly when all four Dini derivatives are equal and finite.
Example: let for and . For , the difference quotient at is . For and for alike, it takes every value in for arbitrarily small . So and , and is not differentiable at .
Non-example of finiteness: for at , the quotient for is , so . The Dini derivatives exist but are not real numbers.
