Dirac operator
Definition
Let be a Riemannian manifold and let be a complex vector bundle over . Let be a first-order linear differential operator acting on smooth sections of . In a local chart , let be the inverse of the matrix of the metric . The operator is a Dirac operator if, in every local chart and every local trivialisation of ,
Remarks
Equivalently, the principal symbol of is times the identity, so is a generalised Laplacian. It follows that is an elliptic operator.
Example: on with the flat metric, let be complex matrices with , and let act on -valued functions. Then , so is a Dirac operator. For and , this is .
Non-example: on , the operator has , whose second-order term has the wrong sign.
On a spin manifold, the Atiyah–Singer Dirac operator acts on the spinor bundle through Clifford multiplication and the Levi-Civita connection.
